The history of The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe dates back many centuries. The Tribe, the first settlers of this part of the Great Lakes region, lived peacefully as hunters and stewards of the land. The Tribal traditions continue today and are passed from generation to generation. While based firmly on traditional teaching, The Tribe has emerged at the forefront of economic prosperity and diversity.
Forty years ago, The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe began its journey of self-sufficiency, working towards a single goal; to lift Tribal Members from poverty and provide them with meaningful work. A way to make a living without sacrificing their core values or forsaking traditional teachings. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe succeeded beyond all expectations and is today viewed by many other federally recognized tribes as an example of what they, too, could become.
As part of its diversification, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe established Migizi Economic Development Company which operates a portfolio of businesses, including Bakinaw Federal Contracting. The purpose of Migizi, Eagle in the Ojibway language, is to establish a range of revenue streams for The Tribe independent of gaming operations. Known internally as a seventh-generation project, the goal of Migizi EDC is to provide economic security for the next seven generations of tribal members—a significant challenge.
One of the newest additions to the Migizi family is Bakinaw Federal contracting, whose mission is to increase employment for Tribal Members in scientific, engineering, math, and technical (STEM) fields while developing new job opportunities to support the Federal Government. Bakinaw Federal Contracting, a sub-S corporation, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan. It was formed to serve both the needs of our clients and the needs of Tribal Members.
